INTRODUCTION

Boom Beach has been around for over 12 years, yet one of its most active and financially significant player bases remains almost entirely invisible to the global community. The Chinese mainland version of the game - known locally as 海岛奇兵 (Hǎidǎo Qíbīng) - operates as a completely separate regional edition, and almost nothing about it reaches the outside world.

According to ChinaNet, this isolation is not accidental. The Chinese server runs under domestic licensing rules, distributed exclusively through Chinese app channels - the iOS App Store and major Android marketplaces - with no cross-server access to the global version. Community discussions stay within domestic platforms like QQ groups and local game forums, rarely reaching overseas Discord servers or social media. The publisher releases no public data to the international community, making this one of the most under-discussed regional editions of any major mobile game.

This article changes that. With ChinaNet's help - who has played since launch, closely follows official development and developer interviews, and translates first-hand overseas news for Chinese players - we are opening a window into a version of Boom Beach that most global players have never seen.

THE PLAYER BASE: LOYAL, VETERAN, AND FINANCIALLY POWERFUL

The scale of the Chinese server is larger than most global players would expect. Based on ChinaNet's assessment, the number of active players on the Chinese server is roughly equal to or slightly higher than that of the global version - a striking figure given how little attention this server receives internationally.

What makes this player base particularly notable is its composition. Almost all active players are long-time veterans with years of experience. The community has maintained exceptionally high loyalty over the years, and within it sits a group of high-spending players whose purchasing power is well above average. These players form the core high-value users that keep the server financially stable.

Before 2022, the two communities were not as separated as they are today. Prior to the server split - which was carried out in compliance with Chinese regulations - Chinese players had long been a dominant presence on global leaderboards. The barrier worked both ways: overseas players who wanted to access the Chinese server were required to complete facial recognition verification and register domestic social media accounts. This history, in ChinaNet's view, proves that Chinese players are an irreplaceable part of Boom Beach's global community - not a footnote, but a foundation.

It is also worth noting that the Chinese Boom Beach creator community on Douyin and Bilibili - China's equivalents of TikTok and YouTube - is several times larger than the international creator scene. There are more active content creators covering this game in China than in the rest of the world combined. A number of skilled Chinese players also access the global version directly without a VPN - the same way Clash of Clans works in China - and some actively seek to compete with overseas players.

GAME STATISTICS: HOW MONETIZATION WORKS ON THE CHINESE SERVER

The revenue generated by the Chinese server is considerable, driven largely by its high-spending player segment. According to our June 2026 Sensor Tower data, the Chinese version brought in $700,000 in a single month - a number that becomes even more striking when you consider it comes from iOS alone, as Google Play is unavailable in China.

Image

To put this in perspective: out of the total global revenue of $1,300,000 in June 2026, the Chinese iOS version contributed $700,000 - meaning a single country on a single platform accounts for more than half of what the entire Android global version generates in the same month. The game also reached its peak ranking of #45 among Strategy Free Games in the Chinese App Store during this period, with 20,000 downloads recorded.

The monetization model mirrors the global version in structure, but with significant local additions. The publisher launches exclusive seasonal skins and cumulative spending events at specific times of the year. Players primarily spend on instant troop training and seasonal exclusive skins.

One particularly notable feature ChinaNet shared is the monthly instant training package, priced below one US dollar, which has become extremely popular across the player base. While high-spending players make large purchases to max out troops quickly, the majority of ordinary players opt for this low-cost monthly offer - a monetization approach that captures both ends of the spending spectrum simultaneously.

The shop regularly refreshes gift packs, though ChinaNet notes that many of these offer poor value compared to the monthly training package. Most gift packs are sold for real money rather than in-game currency.

The Points Currency System

The Chinese server also features a blue currency known simply as Points - a common token used across most Tencent games. Every Supercell title operated in mainland China includes this currency. However, on the Chinese Boom Beach server, Points can only be spent in an exclusive shop available to players who have entered a creator code, giving them very limited practical value. As a result, many players do not even know what it is for.

The Gold Bar Lottery

One of the most unusual monetization features on the Chinese server is a partnership activity with mobile carriers. Players can participate by recharging their phone balance to enter a lottery for in-game supplies. One of the available prizes is a physical 5-gram gold bar - a branded souvenir collectible, not investment gold. The winning chance is extremely low, and ChinaNet notes that almost no players actually participate. Nevertheless, the promotion has been running for a considerable time and generates extra revenue for the operator.

Social Media Rewards

Players can earn in-game diamonds by following the game's official social media accounts: 200 diamonds for following the official WeChat account, and 188 diamonds for following the official Douyin (TikTok) account.

UPDATES: BEHIND SCHEDULE, BUT CATCHING UP

The Chinese server does not follow the same update timeline as the global version. Patches typically arrive later than the global release, and the most recent major update suffered a significant delay due to internal issues within the local planning team.

That said, nearly all new content from the global server eventually makes its way to the Chinese version. The localization process is not purely a copy-paste operation - content that receives heavy criticism from Chinese players undergoes revision before or after launch. ChinaNet points to the Sinister Shop and Prototype Lab as examples of mechanics that were adjusted following negative player feedback.

There is also a layer of cultural localization. Certain character skins deemed sensitive are replaced with camouflage wraps or original locally developed skins. Beyond these adjustments, the gameplay content remains largely identical to the global version.

Interestingly, the Chinese server used to receive exclusive updates and special events that the global version never got - complete with brand-new island skins and limited-time rewards. ChinaNet believes these cosmetics would have been genuinely impressive for international players, and some examples are covered in detail in the Exclusive Content section below.

DEVELOPER COMMUNICATION: PROMISES AND SILENCE

The primary channel for official communication on the Chinese server is Weibo - a platform comparable to X. When players raise strong objections, the team has historically revised relevant content and issued official apology announcements.

However, the relationship between the community and the operators is strained. ChinaNet describes a pattern where player complaints are frequently left unaddressed, and many in the community feel the team focuses disproportionately on pushing paid content rather than addressing gameplay concerns. At one point, the team gathered a large volume of player suggestions and published a centralized reply post promising to deliver the requested optimizations. According to ChinaNet, none of those promises have been fulfilled to date.

The situation is made more complicated by a communication gap between the global and Chinese teams. When Supercell pushes unpopular balance changes internationally, Chinese players often direct their frustration at the local operator - even when that operator had no part in the decision.

At the time of writing, the official Weibo account had gone nearly a month without a public post, with close to a thousand unanswered comments piling up. Meanwhile, preview information about the upcoming Level 29 Headquarters update was released exclusively through WeChat rather than the main community channel - a decision that left many players feeling sidelined and further fuelled community frustration.

KEY DIFFERENCES: WHAT MAKES THE CHINESE SERVER UNIQUE

This is where the Chinese server truly diverges from the global experience. The differences go far beyond cosmetics - they touch the core progression systems, the server architecture, and the competitive ecosystem.

The Armament Value System

The most significant exclusive feature is the Armament Value system - a core island development indicator that already exists in Clash of Clans but has no equivalent in the global version of Boom Beach. Players accumulate this value by building and upgrading defensive structures, resource buildings, and support facilities; conducting lab research; upgrading heroes and their abilities; crafting and upgrading statues; raising Mystery Monuments; collecting trophies; and unlocking skins. Even basic resource buildings like the Sawmill contribute a fixed amount to this value.

Players are ranked on a global leaderboard according to their total Armament Value, and once a player's value reaches specific milestones, they are rewarded with a decorative frame.

Two Isolated Servers

The server architecture itself is unique. The Chinese version runs on two completely isolated servers with no data interoperability between them. The original server, called Headquarters (大本营), is home to all veteran players' accounts. A second server called Fountain of Life (生命之泉), was launched later as a fresh-start environment for new players. Rankings, task forces, and player data cannot be shared between the two servers under any circumstances.

The Ranking System

The ranking system is more elaborate than the global version, covering individual player standings, task force rankings, and Super Crab event leaderboards. Players who achieve high rankings on the Super Crab leaderboard receive exclusive trophy rewards - a powerful incentive that drives many players to fully upgrade their buildings and technologies as quickly as possible.

Light Statues (Bright Light Statues)

The Chinese server features an exclusive statue system called Light Statues, also referred to as Bright Light Statues or Limited-Time Idols. They come in three tiers: Minor Statue, Fine Statue, and Epic Statue. These statues only function for 30 days after creation and expire automatically. They cannot be boosted with Power Powder and do not occupy regular idol slots - they have their own dedicated slot.

Light Statues offer three types of bonus attributes:

  • A proportional refund of diamonds spent in-game
  • A chance to receive the same time-saving item after using one
  • A chance to get Power Powder back after consumption

The fragments needed to craft these statues can only be obtained from limited-time events. They were available during a city voting event in 2025, but ChinaNet notes there is currently no way to obtain them. The crystals needed for crafting are obtained through social media rewards described above.

Time-Savers

The Chinese server features exclusive time-saving items unavailable anywhere in the global version. The red time-saver removes 5 hours of waiting time, while the green one removes 1 hour. These items are only available through in-game gift bundles purchased with real money and are exclusive to the Chinese mainland server.

Super Crab Events

Super Crab events run more frequently on the Chinese server than on the global version, and high-ranking players on the Super Crab leaderboard receive exclusive trophy rewards not available globally.

Additional Platform Missions

Squad Leader functions carry slight differences compared to the global version. Beyond standard in-game tasks, players can complete additional missions on affiliated platforms - including the social media reward system described above - to earn extra in-game resources. This cross-platform integration does not exist in the global version.

Activity Calendars

Monthly activity calendars on the Chinese server do not align with the global schedule. Some limited global events do not launch on the Chinese server at the same time or at all. The Warships tech tree occasionally receives minor local adjustments, while task force core gameplay remains entirely consistent with the global version.

EXCLUSIVE COSMETIC CONTENT: WHAT CHINA GETS THAT THE WORLD DOESN'T

This is perhaps the most visually striking difference between the two versions. The Chinese server has received a substantial catalogue of exclusive cosmetic content across every category - island skins, headquarters skins, gunboat skins, troop skins, landing craft skins, and even tree decorations. Below is a complete overview of everything marked as China-exclusive on the boombeachx.cn fan database.

THE FAN COMMUNITY: BOOMBEACHX.CN

One further testament to how active the Chinese Boom Beach community is: a single developer known as 浅暖 (Qiǎnnuǎn) has built and maintained a comprehensive fan database at boombeachx.cn since 2023. The site functions as a full encyclopaedia of the game - covering troop upgrade tables, building data, a complete skin catalogue for both global and Chinese server content, energy calculators for Warships, activity cycle timers, and a dedicated section for Chinese server exclusive data. It even maintains a separate channel for global players (boombeach0) and a QQ community group. This level of community infrastructure, built by a single individual, speaks volumes about the dedication of the Chinese player base.

THE FUTURE: STABLE, BUT NOT WITHOUT RISK

With Tencent managing operations, the Chinese server is likely to remain financially stable for the foreseeable future. The operator will continue running well-planned events that steadily drive revenue, and the loyal high-spending player base shows no signs of leaving quickly.

However, ChinaNet raises a concern worth taking seriously. The Chinese server is not fully insulated from decisions made by the global development team at Supercell. When unpopular balance changes are pushed internationally, Chinese players direct their frustration at the local operator - even when that operator had no influence over the decision. Over time, ChinaNet believes this accumulated frustration could gradually shrink the player base and, if left unaddressed, contribute to a long-term decline of the Chinese server.

The structural communication gap between the global team, the local operator, and the player community remains the single biggest unresolved challenge facing Chinese Boom Beach today.

CONCLUSION

The Chinese version of Boom Beach is not a side story - it is a parallel universe. A loyal veteran community, a high-spending player base, exclusive progression systems like Armament Value and Light Statues, two isolated servers, an elaborate ranking ecosystem, a catalogue of stunning exclusive cosmetics that global players have never seen, and a creator community larger than the global one. All of this has existed for over a decade, almost entirely invisible to the international community.

We hope this article changes that - even slightly. A special thanks to ChinaNet for opening this window and putting into words what no one outside China has documented before.
